College to offer free dental service to refugee status seekers

YOKOHAMA —

A Yokohama-based college launched a free dental service for refugee applicants in Japan on Tuesday in collaboration with the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees’ Japan office and nongovernmental organizations.

The first such service offered by a Japanese college will address people leaving toothaches and other dental problems unattended amid a lack of support from the Japanese government, according to Tsurumi University and the UNHCR Representation in Japan. NGOs tackling the issue of refugees will refer potential patients to the college for treatment at its affiliated Tsurumi University Dental Hospital at the school’s expense, they said.
