Japan to give Y500 million in aid to quake-hit China as death toll nears 12,000

TOKYO —
Japan will give 500 million yen worth of emergency grants and relief aid to quake-hit China, including blankets and tents, and is ready to provide additional assistance such as the dispatch of personnel if necessary, Foreign Minister Masahiko Komura announced Tuesday evening. The aid will be distributed directly to the Chinese government as well as through international organizations. Komura said details of the breakdown have yet to be decided, awaiting specific appeals from international agencies such as the Red Cross. The death toll is believed to have passed 12,000.
The Foreign Ministry, together with the Fire and Disaster Management Agency, the Japan International Cooperation Agency and other ministries, are preparing for the delivery of aid including food, water and blankets, as well as the dispatch of disaster relief medical teams comprised of doctors and nurses, government officials said. Machimura said that rescue teams, helicopters and other forms of assistance are already on standby pending any requests from China.
Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways announced they will provide free airlifting for aid materials on flights between Japan and China through June 16. JAL will also provide free tickets for disaster relief personnel in both public and private organizations, while ANA will do so only for public officials.
